Ready for the Oscar?
Once again, a DFG-insured film may have hopes of winning the coveted Oscar! The feature film Krigsseileren (War Sailor) by director and screenwriter Gunnar Vikene is entering the race for Norway's submission to the 95th Academy Awards. In the Best Feature Films category, the historical film is a candidate for the Oscar shortlist, which will be announced on 21 December.
The German premiere was celebrated at the Filmfest Hamburg on 2 October.
The story of the film has a true background. In the gripping war epic, two civilian sailors Alfred Garnes (Kristoffer Joner) and his childhood friend Sigbjørn (Pål Sverre Hagen) fight for their lives. They are working on a merchant ship in the middle of the Atlantic when World War II breaks out and they get caught between the fronts. At the same time, Alfred's wife Cecilia (Ine Marie Wilmann) is struggling through the war at home in Bergen alone with their three children.
At sea, news reaches Alfred and Sigbjørn that British planes have accidentally bombed an elementary school and many civilian homes in Bergen. They wonder if there is anything left at home to return to.
We keep our fingers crossed and wish them good luck in the pre-selection!
